LanguageCert score chart: scores, CEFR levels and what you need
In short
LanguageCert Academic and General score each skill from 0 to 100, and every score maps to a CEFR level: 40 is B1, 60 is B2, 75 is C1 and 90 is C2. UK visas ask for a CEFR level in each skill. Australian visas ask for a minimum score per skill, which is also where the official LanguageCert-to-IELTS equivalents come from.
Score to CEFR level
| CEFR level | LanguageCert score | Academic | General |
|---|---|---|---|
| C2 | 90–100 | Reported | — |
| C1 | 75–89 | Reported | Reported |
| B2 | 60–74 | Reported | Reported |
| B1 | 40–59 | Reported | Reported |
| A2 | 20–39 | — | Reported |
Academic reports B1 to C2, so anything under 40 shows as below B1. General reports A2 to C1. The speaking and listening SELT for UK family visas doesn’t use this scale: you get a pass result at the level you sit.
What score you need for a UK visa
UK visas set a CEFR level, and you need it in each skill the route tests.
Skilled Worker
B2 in all four skills: 60 or more in each.
Student, degree level
B2 in all four skills: 60 or more in each.
Student, below degree level
B1 in all four skills: 40 or more in each.
Family, settlement, citizenship
A1, A2 or B1 in speaking and listening: a pass at that level.

LanguageCert vs IELTS
Australian Home Affairs sets a minimum LanguageCert Academic score and an IELTS band for each English level, which makes these official equivalents. They’re per skill, and the bar is highest for speaking.
| IELTS (each skill) | Listening | Reading | Writing | Speaking |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | 41 | 44 | 45 | 54 |
| 6 | 57 | 60 | 64 | 70 |
| 7 | 67 | 71 | 78 | 82 |
| 8 | 80 | 83 | 89 | 89 |
These are minimum LanguageCert Academic scores, taken from the Home Affairs tables for Vocational, Competent, Proficient and Superior English. The full Australian requirements.
FAQ
What is a good LanguageCert score?
It depends on what you need it for. 60 is the start of B2, which UK work visas and degree-level student visas ask for. For an Australian visa, Competent English needs at least 57 in listening, 60 in reading, 64 in writing and 70 in speaking.
What LanguageCert score is B2?
60 to 74. B1 is 40 to 59, C1 is 75 to 89 and C2 is 90 to 100.
What LanguageCert score equals IELTS 7?
Australian Home Affairs treats LanguageCert Academic scores of at least 67 in listening, 71 in reading, 78 in writing and 82 in speaking as equal to IELTS 7 in each skill. The equivalent is different for every skill.
What LanguageCert score equals IELTS 6?
For Australian visas, at least 57 in listening, 60 in reading, 64 in writing and 70 in speaking, which Home Affairs treats as equal to IELTS 6 in each skill.
How is the speaking and listening SELT reported?
As a pass at the level you sit (A1, A2 or B1), not as a CEFR band on the 0 to 100 scale.
